Introduction:

The adventure playground was opened in 1983 and is one of five adventure playgrounds in Bristol. It consists of an outdoor space with timber play structures and an indoor activity centre. We open six days a week offering a child-centred, challenging, stimulating and safe environment in which to meet and play.

Facilities and Activities:

We actively support the right of children and young people to access freely chosen play opportuinities and to be consulted in matters relating to them. Playground users help to design, build and transform their own play space using a wide variety of materials and plenty of ingenuity.

A team of experienced play workers and volunteers are on hand to support and enable children and young people to shape and enjoy a changing environment for imaginative, social, creative and physical play. Through this they are able to learn and develop their skills, build confidence, independence and self esteem. We also advise and support parents and carers who come to the playground.

The site also hosts indoor activities whilst the external area has benefited recently from investment from the Play Pathfinder project with an exciting range of new structures.

Age Range:

The playground is a popular meeting place for hundreds of local children and young people. It is used mainly by 8-14 year olds but under 8s are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult.

Recent developments:

Major improvements to Windmill Hill were completed in 2009 under the Play Pathfinder programme funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

The children and staff at the adventure playground worked closely with a local company called Touchwood to produce new and innovative play structures. Built entirely from sustainable wood supplies, the structures offer a range of challenging and exciting play experiences for children of all ages

This site was chosen as a site for investment under the Pathfinder programme through an assessment process, which involved a review of location, appropriate size, visibility, recent investment (or lack of), relationship to other regeneration programmes, child density and expected relationship within the emerging Plans for the Parks and Green Space Strategy.

The budget for the site was determined by the size and potential scope of the project in relation to the Pathfinder resources, together with the identification of any additional funding available from sources other than Pathfinder.

Access:

The adventure playground is accessible from the car park of the Windmill Hill City farm.

Layout:

The playground has a rich indoor and outdoor play environment for children of all ages. Indoor facilities include a large play/craft room, kitchen, toilets and staff office.

Local Groups:

Windmill Hill Cith Farm, its adventure playground and its family centre offers a wide range of services for all the family and work closely with other play and youth services in the area.
